Knowledge Management is an often over-looked and under-valued activity in any organization.  With regard to a definition, KMWorld.com and the Gartner Group state, “Knowledge management is a discipline that promotes an integrated approach to identifying, capturing, evaluating, retrieving, and sharing all of an enterprise’s information assets. These assets may include databases, documents, policies, procedures, and previously un-captured expertise and experience in individual workers” (Duhon, 1998). In her post below, Yasmina Khelifi advocates for employees to take  the lead when it comes to this discipline – and I concur as long as we are maintaining that  KM resources be secure, accessible, organized, current, and have some level of redundancy. Our workgroups have recently turned to Microsoft Teams as a solution for file-sharing and collaboration. Share your organization’s approaches to knowledge management in the coments below:

From Voices on Project Management Blog:   By Yasmina Khelifi, PMP, PMI-ACP, PMI-PBA In my last post, I wrote about the benefits of sharing knowledge. Now it’s time to talk about how you’ll document and maintain that information. And this is where project leaders should turn to their teams for ideas. A few ye…

From Voices on Project Management: By Cyndee Miller It’s Earth Day and this year’s event comes with an even greater level of urgency—and action. Two-thirds of people say climate change is a “global emergency,” per a survey by United Nations. And some high-profile government and business leaders are st…

From Voices on Project Management: By Emily Luijbregts During my presentation at this year’s PMXPO, I received a lot of questions about the skills needed to adapt to and excel in leading virtual teams. It seems to be something that a lot of project managers are struggling with at the moment, but it’s something that can…

From Voices on Project Management: By Lynda Bourne I was recently involved in a discussion about why some projects fail and others succeed, even when they’re completed in similar circumstances. The most common determinant of project outcomes—both positive and negative—boiled down to the way the people deliver…

In my experience, one of the biggest pitfalls with regard to the Backlog is not being able to hit your stride in terms of refinement.  The proper cadence can be a science, and I have known a lot of managers who are heavy-handed. On the other hand, too many items can seem insignificant over time.

Review Christian Bisson’s post below and give your feed back in the comments:

From Voices on Project Management: By Christian Bisson A key artifact for any successful team is a healthy backlog: a list of what’s needed to bring value to the project—written in a way the team can understand and ordered so the team is always focused on what brings the most value. Yet between all the user stories,…

Knowledge sharing within an organization requires leadership by example.  In my experience, it really becomes a trust issue, and if knowledge remains entrenched with high-level, experienced employees, the organization suffers.  Read more in Yasmina Khelifi’s post below:

From Voices on Project Management: By Yasmina Khelifi: Sharing knowledge has so many benefits: It’s at the heart of business continuity. It boosts team morale. It creates a culture of continued learning. It connects remote employees to crucial information. It encourages the flow of ideas and can even ch…

From Voices on Project Management: By Cyndee Miller No one could have possibly made it through this pandemic unchanged—as a person or as a professional. Existing skills have been put to the test and new ones were developed along the way. Sometimes it was something relatively simple like mastering the mute button. Other times…

From Voices on Project Management: By Cyndee Miller We’ve been mired in the COVID muck for more than a year now. The toll on our physical and mental health can’t be understated, but we’ve also seen how it’s fundamentally altered the world of work. And even as more vaccine shots make their way into more arms…

From Voices on Project Management: by Dave Wakeman I recently had a chance to chat with Mark Herschberg, author of a great new book, The Career Toolkit. Mark was an interesting person to talk with at this point because his book lays out a few essential skills and ideas that will help us navigate the rest of the pandemic, but also …

From Voices on Project Management: by Lynda Bourne Every decision involves making a choice between alternatives, with the project leader picking from a number of options. This selection is influenced by information (albeit sometimes insufficient) and preferences rooted in values and ethics. In these circumstances, the modern t…
